PECs

PECS is not a method of treating Autism. Rather it is a type of augmentative and alternative communication technique where individuals communicate via picture. Children use the pictures as their words. Eventually, this can help facilitate comprehension and the use of verbal expression.

There is a formalized program for implementation of the PECS program. However, family or professionals usually create the boards, and pictures. The essential component of he system is to establish attempts at communication and growing their vocabulary.

With any child that is developing, communication is essential to the interaction with people in our environment. When an individual cannot communicate, frustration and behaviors emerge. By implementing an Augmentative system, a child can reduce frustration, because they now have the ability to indicate what they want.
